The term roustabout was originally used to describe fairground or circus workers who handled materials for construction. Today, roustabouts are most often found in the energy and agriculture industries, working in a number of hands-on roles.

Depending on their industry and role, roustabouts work with equipment such as backhoes, shears, maintainers, forklifts, trenchers, trucks and trailers.
