The concept of ledgers have been around for thousands of years, with Leonardo da Vinci's regular collaborator Luca Pacioli using the ledger concept to invent what we now know as double entry accounting - arguably the foundation of financial management. Bookkeepers are responsible for a business's general ledger - managing all transactions, producing financial statements and other reports.
